Movie: Hancock

New Will Smith movie.

From the trailer, I was expecting something like My Super Ex-Girlfriend. And the movie did indeed start out like that, but slowly devolved into Happy Gilmore. Then slowly added more depth, with a little dose of The Vampire Lestat.

This movie seems to get rather mixed reviews. Maybe the plot development surprised too many people, who came to the movie with different expectations. They expected Will Smith in Hitch, but got caught off guard when they saw I, Robot.

But I for one enjoyed the twist. I think the movie could have been something better if they had more time. It could easily catch the imagination of the masses like Matrix or Anne Rice’s vampire series, had it been better written. I’ve gotten tired of Anne Rice some years ago, but my imagination is just ripe for another story about immortals.

Come on, even Darkman, a vengeful burns victim who can make temporary skin, can become a franchise with 2 sequels. Hancock certainly could have created franchise of its own if the writers and producers had dared to dream bigger.

Instead, they kept stuffing the film into a Happy Gilmore mold.

But there were some comedic moments I enjoyed. Loved them cos the comedic situation was one of a kind, like when Will casually picked up a carving fork and just calmly stabbed the other immortal, while the other immortal is just trying to ignore him.

Still, the movie feels like a missed opportunity.

There just aren’t enough Peter Jacksons in the industry.
