Movie: WALL-E

New Pixar cartoon.

Cute. Very very cute.

Earth is abandoned. Mountains of trash everywhere. One last beat-up robot still tirelessly cleaning up the epic mess after 700 years. Until one day, a heavily-armed ‘female’ probe-bot lands on Earth to determine if the planet can yet sustain life.

It’s rather gutsy of Pixar to do a feature cartoon with a protagonist that cannot hold  a conversation. Everybody ‘knows’ that if you want to market to kids, you need funny voices, like Robin Williams, Mike Myers, Billy Crystal or Owen Wilson. To do a cartoon where the character hardly says ANYTHING?

And add a romantic element between two un-speaking robots? It’s… special. In the Forrest Gump way of being ’special’. In fact, the romance is very much like that between Forrest and Jenny. Adorable and oddly heart-warming. Like seeing two cats cuddling together.

It’s an OK movie. Better than Cars. But it might not sell as much merchandise as Cars did.

It’s like a Lassie movie with an AiBo.

At the very least, the short skit in the very beginning is one of the best so far. About a magician, his magic hat, and a wiley rabbit. Much like Bugs vs Elmer. Very well done.
