Food: Boston SohoKL
January 30, 2009 on 4:20 pm | In Me! | No CommentsSome interesting food, with really random and strange names.
The names are weird and gimmicky and does not describe the food at all. There’s even a drink called “Pussy Juice”, which I think is some blend of sour plum and something else.
The setting is pub-bish. Spacious and comfy seats. Big screens always showing sporting events. Obviously a masculine theme.
Food tastes alright. Quality of ingredients is rather generous. But regretfully, too little fried rice / fried rice noodles in the dishes I’ve ordered here.
What’s really noteable though, is the chili padi they serve. It’s the freshest and spiciest chili padi I’ve ever eaten in a while! Most often, I’ld have to munch a number of pieces before I can feel a burn on my tongue. This one had an effect on the second piece.
I spooned out the chili padi seeds from soy sauce and kept it in a piece of tissue paper. I nearly lost the tissue when the waiter cleared the table when my back was turned. I’m gonna try to see if I can grow these seeds, and hope their fruits will have the same kick.
I hope the seeds are still viable after marinating a few hours in a salty soy sauce solution…
Perfluorinated Chemicals
January 30, 2009 on 10:37 am | In Me! | 2 CommentsI have long been aware of the ‘conspiracy’ for adding fluorine in our drinking water and toothpaste. For the longest time, I’ve tried to limit my exposure by using random herbal non-fluoridated toothpaste, that often tastes funny.
The conspiracy is, that there’s no scientific evidence that fluoride improves dental health. On the contrary, it leads to decreased male fertility, bone cancer, and yellow teeth among many deleterious effects. Fluorine is a waste product from many industries, like metal smelting. It’s also nearly impossible to dispose of.
Throw it into the air, and you got acid rain. Vicious, acid rain. Buildings melted, and livestock in the surrounding area had yellow teeth.
You know what they use to etch glass? Hydrofluoric acid. It’s an acid you can’t even keep in a glass bottle in high concentrations or it’ll eat right through the container. If you put fluorine in a metal drum with walls several inches thick, it’ll eat through that as well.
You just can’t make that many drums. Too much fluorine is being made. So what’s the best thing to do?
Spread propaganda that fluoride is good for you. ‘Pay off’ scientists who’ll endorse the idea. Research grants are the currency used. And big industries always has more money to spend than people who are FOR the public good. And then they can dump the poison into our drinking water and toothpastes.
SELLING you the poison that they can’t dispose of cheaply. Masterful stroke!
It’s like charging the dead man walking for the cost of the lethal injection.
Naturally, when I noticed studies on PFC exposure and decrease fertility, I took notice.
Now I’m looking up what are the sources of PFC.
“PFCs are used to make stain-repellent coatings in carpets, textiles and paints, non- stick coatings on saucepans and the insides of fast food and microwave popcorn wrappings. Brand-name products made using PFCs include Gore-Tex outdoor wear, Stainmaster stain-proof carpet treatments and Teflon easy-to-clean cookware. PFCs are also widely used in industrial processes and in certain fire fighting foams. They have been linked to liver damage and reproductive problems in fish and certain mammals.”

Interesting…
Does that mean no more Teflon for us?
Dang! Where can I get hold of one of those old skool super-heavy cast iron wok? You really can’t make a decent char kuey teow without one.
Movie: Outlander
January 29, 2009 on 11:12 pm | In Movies | No CommentsAliens vs Vikings.
It’ll never be a credible epic fantasy movie. But quite okay.
Not as B-grade as the premise might suggest. Perfectly good production quality.
Entertaining.
Books: Warehouse sale
January 29, 2009 on 4:06 pm | In Books | 2 CommentsStumbled onto a random Times warehouse sale after lunch, and had some time to browse…
Found a few too many good buys.
Notably, 3 Robert Jordan books. I’ve got a partial collection of his books, but in recent years (read this decade) I’ve only downloaded the ebooks and stopped spending money buying fantasy novels. These were going for MYR10 & 15, so I figured, might as well.
Tad Williams’ Shadowmarch was rather random. I’ve read The Dragonbone Chair, and the Otherland stories. Heavy books all, kinda amazed how I could find the time to read through them before.
Bible Code II. Read the first book and was most fascinated. Flipped thru book 2 in S’pore’s Borders many years ago. Kinda unnerved and disgusted at what he tried to do to build on his earlier success. I think he tried to suggest that UFO’s landed near some ancient site or something. Gotta read it again and be sure…
Gregory’s is a series of car maintenance and repair manuals. They’re ALWAYS shrink-wrapped. This one was going at 50% off, and for a Toyota Corolla. But, an old car is an old car. Should be similiar enough. I’m sure I can learn a thing or two even from this.
Lastly, Mirrormask. This is the book of the movie that Neil Gaiman wrote, Dave McKean directed, and Jim Henson Co. produced. Has all the storyboards and dialogue that Neil wrote. I once sat down at the Time’s Bookshop at One Utama and read this cover to cover. Cos the movie never reached Malaysia. And had only very limited screenings in Singapore, that I never managed to catch.
So… hmm…. I think I’ve bought mostly books that I’ve already read…
Oh, and a 2008 Calendar too. For like MYR5, I get 365 days’ worth of Get Fuzzy. Good buy me thinks.
